Tar Heels Finish Eleventh in Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

NEW ORLEANS - An overcast day at the English Turn Golf & Country Club did not keep the Tar Heels down, they climbed two spots on the team leaderboard in the third and final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate to finish eleventh out of the 18 teams competing.
On a day where course conditions were very challenging Mariana Ocano (+5) led the way for the Tar Heels with an even-par 72, which saw her end the tournament tied for 15th. Ocano's third round of the tournament, highlighted by a 2-under-par front nine, bested her first two rounds of 76-73.
Senior Kelly Whaley (+15), sophomore Ava Bergner (+16) and freshman Nicole Lu (+15) all posted a 5-over-par 77 on Tuesday.
Whaley's round featured an even-par front nine, with back-to-back birdies on holes two and three.
After starting off with two bogeys and a double-bogey, Lu rallied with a birdie on her fourth hole of the day to get back to 3-over-par.
Through her first two holes, Bergner was 1-under-par, but would go on to finish her first nine at 2-over-par.
Junior Brynn Walker (+18) had an up-and-down day with seven bogeys en route to a 7-over-par 79 in her final round of the tournament.
After leading the tournament wire-to-wire, The University of Texas Longhorns took home the victory with a 12-over-par performance.
The Tar Heels' women's golf team will be back in action on Friday March 8, at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, SC.
