NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of North Carolina cross country teams competed against a strong field at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Friday. Led by seniors Paige Hofstad and Jeremy Brown, the women's team finished 20th with 492 points and the men 21st with 524 points.

Carolina took on some of the best competition in the country in the Friday's Blue Division events. The women were tested against 10 of the top 30 teams in the nation, including five top-10 programs. The men's team competed against 21 teams, including 12 nationally ranked programs as voted on by the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll.

Hofstad led the Heels for the second time this season, clocking 17:09.00 to place 55th in the women's 5K race. Senior Erin Edmundson ran 17:35.21 to finish 97th while freshmen Lizzy Harding and Alex Morris clocked times of 17:38.39 and 17:43.89, respectively, for 106th and 113th place. Graduate student Morgan Ilse rounded out the Tar Heels' team score after crossing the finish line in 17:51.84 for 126th place.

In the men's Blue Division, Brown finished 66th with a five-mile time of 24:21.51. Senior Brandon Tubby and redshirt-junior Alex Milligan crossed the line within one second of each other, taking 111th and 112th with respective times of 24:52.32 and 24:53.03. Senior Matt Thornton finished 122nd with a time of 25:00.87 and redshirt-junior Luke Peterson ran 25:19.94 for 135th.
