Tar Heels Travel To Notre Dame For Joe Piane Invitational
October 3, 2019 | Cross Country
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina cross country teams are set to continue their season on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational at Burke Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. The women's Blue Division 5K is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the men's Blue Division 5-mile race set to follow at 1:45 p.m. A few Tar Heels will make appearances in the women's and men's open races beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The Tar Heels will travel 19 student-athletes, including nine women and 10 men. On the women's side, redshirt junior Mady Clahane is expected to make her first cross country appearance since 2017 with the other eight women competing in at least their second meet of the season. The 10 Tar Heel men going to Notre Dame have all seen action at least once this season.
Both Carolina teams will face a loaded field in the Blue Division events. The women will take on 23 other programs, including 10 of the top-30 teams in the nation. The Tar Heels will be tested by five top-10 programs, including No. 1 Colorado and No. 3 New Mexico.
The men face 22 other cross country teams in the field, but the competition is no-less challenging. Twelve nationally-ranked men's programs, as well as three others who received votes in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll, will be in attendance of Friday's meet.
