No. 12 Tar Heels Sweep Saturday Double Header, Take Series Over Virginia
April 14, 2018 | Baseball
Charlottesville, Va. – No. 12 North Carolina swept the Saturday double header against the Virginia Cavaliers to win the series and move to 24-12 on the season and 12-6 in ACC play. The Tar Heel offense exploded on Saturday as it combined for 20 runs and 26 hits and was led by Ike Freeman who went 4 for 8 with four RBI and two runs scored on the day.
Game One: UNC 8, UVA 6
After being shut out on Friday night, Carolina wasted little time in getting on the board in game one on Saturday as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning for the early 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels led off the inning with back-to-back infield singles from Dallas Tessar and Michael Busch before they were advanced to second and third on a foul-ball pop fly from Kyle Datres. Brandon Riley brought the first run home with a ground out to third base and Ike Freeman's RBI single brought in the second for the 2-0 advantage.
Virginia cut the Tar Heel lead in half in the bottom of the first, but Carolina tacked on three more in the third inning to extend the lead to 5-1. Once again, Tessar got things going, this time with a solo home run to left field for the 3-1 advantage. Singles from Busch and Riley put two men on for Freeman, who delivered with his second RBI single of the game, and he was followed with a sacrifice bunt from Cody Roberts to bring home the fifth Tar Heel run.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cavaliers scored two runs to bring the score to 5-3. With one out, Cayman Richardson doubled to right field before advancing to third after the ball was misplayed by Tessar. Richardson was brought home by an Andy Weber double to make it 5-2. In the next at bat, Weber advanced to third on a wild pitch before he came home to score after Nate Eikhoff grounded out to Michael Busch at first base.
Carolina got one run back in the eighth inning thanks for a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Clemente Inclan to make it 6-3. With one out, Ashton McGee singled through the left side of the infield and was replaced at first by Dylan Enwiller. Zack Gahagan, who barely missed a two-run home run in his at bat, singled to right field to put runners on the corners for Inclan. The freshman hit a long fly ball to the warning track to drive home Enwiller for the 6-3 lead. Inclan has been a big offensive piece for the Tar Heels lately, as he has six RBI in his last seven games. In his last four games as a pinch hitter, he has five RBI.
Virginia scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game, 6-6. After Josh Hiatt came on to replace starter Austin Bergner to begin the inning, Cameron Comer doubled to left center to begin the inning for Virginia. A Cavalier sacrifice bunt moved Comer to third and a single from Cayman Richardson brought him home to make the score 6-4. With one out and a man on first, Hiatt got the ground ball he was looking for, but a botched double play attempt put runners on first and second. Back-to-back singles from Nate Eikhoff and Alex Tappen completed the comeback as we went in to the ninth inning tied at six.
But, Carolina came back with two big runs of their own in the ninth inning to regain the lead, 8-6. Kyle Datres picked the perfect time to extend his hitting streak to 15 games as he led things off with a single before making it to second on a passed ball. For the third time in the game, Freeman delivered with a RBI single to give the Heels a 7-6 advantage. Cody Roberts followed Freeman's lead with a RBI single of his own as the Tar Heels went in to the bottom of the ninth lead, 8-6.
Brett Daniels shut down the Cavaliers in the ninth inning to pick up his sixth win of the season as the Tar Heels took game two of the series, and game one of the double header.
Austin Bergner had a heck of a day on the mound for the Tar Heels as he threw seven innings and only allowed three runs on five hits while not allowing a walk to the Cavaliers.
Game 2: UNC 12, UVA 6
The Tar Heels picked up right where they left off in game one of the double header by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Busch got things started with a big home run to left field for the 1-0 lead before Carolina loaded the bases with one out. McGee drew the walk to bring home the second run while Gahagan hit a RBI single to right field to make it 3-0. With two strikes, Roberts was hit by a pitch for the fourth and final run of the inning.
After Virginia cut the lead in half by the third inning, Carolina tacked on another four-run inning in the top of the fourth to take the 8-2 lead. Back-to-back singles from Roberts and Tessar put runners on the corners before a passed ball scored Roberts. Datres kept his 16-game hitting streak alive with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. After Riley struck out swinging, Freeman hit a sacrifice fly for his fourth RBI on the weekend to make it 6-2. With two outs, McGee laced a ball to the outfield for a two-out triple to bring home two Tar Heels to cap the four-run inning.
Virginia responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-5, but Carolina rallied for its third, four-run inning in the eighth to take a 12-5 lead. Virginia would score one more in the ninth inning, but that's as close as they would get as they fell 12-6.
North Carolina will be back in action on Tuesday against NC State at the Durham Bulls Athletic at 6:30 pm ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
