UNC Ventures Outdoors For Makeup Win Over North Carolina A&T
February 27, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina men's tennis team played its first outdoor match of the spring on Tuesday afternoon, beating North Carolina A&T 7-0 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels, ranked sixth nationally, improved to 9-2 with the win, which came in a match that was rescheduled after being snowed out in January.
Next up for the Tar Heels in the start of Atlantic Coast Conference play. UNC hosts Virginia Tech on Friday at 12:30 p.m. – moved up from the original time of 3 – and fans are encouraged to come catch some tennis over lunchtime.
"It was good to play outside today and we're looking forward to opening the ACC season on Friday," UNC coach Sam Paul said.
Against the Aggies on a sunny afternoon that grew cooler as the match wore on, UNC quickly swept the doubles point with 6-0 wins on Courts 1 and 2 and a 6-1 victory on Court 3.
Five of the singles matches were decided in two sets, with sophomore Simon Soendergaard's 6-1, 6-2 win on No. 2 the deciding point. At No. 6, sophomore Kavir Kumar played in his first collegiate dual match, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Court 1 saw a battle, as Tar Heel freshman Benjamin Sigoiun squared off against sophomore Jorge Bartra. Bartra took the first set in a tiebreaker, and Sigouin bounced back to take the second, also in a tiebreaker. Because all of the other matches had finished and the team results had long been decided, the two played a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the winner. Sigouin won that 10-6.
