Michelin Earns All-ACC Honors
October 26, 2018 | Cross Country
JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. - Freshman Enyaeva Michelin captured her first All-ACC accolades at the 2018 ACC Cross Country Championships in Jamaica Plain, Mass. on Friday. Michelin's promising conference performance led the Tar Heel women to another 11th-place team finish with 294 points while the men moved up two spots from the 2017 competition, placing ninth of 15 with a score of 232 points.
"I thought Enyaeva did a fantastic job," UNC head cross country coach Andrea Grove-McDonough said. "I've been saying this all year, but she runs like an upperclassman, not a freshman. She knows what she wants and she sets about every day to make that happen, and she's an exciting athlete to watch and to coach. I'm just excited about that partnership we have moving forward. Frankly, she's an athlete we will build around because she's young, talented and ambitious. She executed the exact game plan she wanted and we knew she was a great closer so I was super proud of her."
Though Michelin was only 27th after the first 1.5k, the freshman made up ground in the next 3k to pass 11 other competitors. In the final four-minute stretch, Michelin overtook four more student-athletes to capture that 12th-place finish and second-team All-ACC honors.
"It's exciting," Michelin said. "It was one of my goals going into the the race so I'm happy I was able to finish All-ACC. I think for the women, being able to place 11th today with two huge pieces missing just showed that all the other girls really did their job to the fullest and put some good work out there on the course. Looking at the big picture for next year, I think we're in a really good position seeing how everyone did today and how hard the other two girls are training."
"On paper our women's team looks the same, but individually they all ran much faster than they did this time a year ago with much better places," Grove-McDonough said. "Even with two big front runners last year, they were 11th. Caroline Alcorta graduated from UNC and we're redshirting two of our best — Morgan Ilse, who I think can contend for the win, and Mady Clahane, who will probably be our number three. That's a big difference. We made the tough choice to redshirt them to build this program around Enyaeva, Morgan and Mady, to see what we can put together with this recruiting class and to continue to move the women's team forward. I see a bright future and even though redshirting those two women is hard especially on a day like today, I think will be so worth it next year and in the future."
With Michelin finishing 12th with a time of 20:45.2, the remaining four scorers on the women's side either bested their Penn State National times or finished within a second of their previous 6k. Casey Greenwalt ran 21:56.2 for 62nd and Erin Edmundson finished 76th with a time of 22:06.5. Ashley Smith and Camryn Petit clocked times of 22:11.1 and 22:12.4 in the event and contributed to Carolina's final score with 82nd- and 83rd-place finishes.
For the men, Jeremy Brown was Carolina's top finisher at the ACC Cross Country Championship meet for the second year in a row. Brown led the Tar Heels with a 31st-place time of 24:28.1 with Alex Milligan right on his heels clocking in 24:28.8 for 32nd. Nick Golebiowski finished 36th with a time of 24:32.4 and Matt Thornton and Ian Moini were Carolina's final two scorers, running 24:58.8 and 25:03.1, respectively, for 71st and 75th.
"To be honest, I'd be lying if I said we weren't disappointed," Grove-McDonough said. "We had some really great races throughout the season, but today is the day that matters. We were actually in O.K. shape in our one through three, but we don't have the depth that we need yet. We're frustrated, but at the same time we see a young team that we can build around. We made a lot of big changes this year in training and we're seeing some great results from it. Every single guy this year has had a significant PR improvement in time and our team has obviously had some promising results, but I think when we stepped onto this stage, you could see what we're missing and what holes we still have to fill. We've got work to do.
Though the final result were not exactly what the team had hoped for, each of the men improved their 8k times this season by anywhere between 30 seconds to almost a minute and a half.
"For coach Bobby Lockhart and I, our takeaway is that historically, this team has walked out of these meets with a results like that and felt sorry for themselves. We're not going to do that. We've got another race to run at the regional meet. Today will show you what you're made of as an athlete, as a program, as a team. This is the ACC. It's a tough conference. It's got a ton of talent and depth upfront in the country. I've only been here for a couple months, as a staff we've only been together for a few weeks, but we've had some really good things happen this year."
Breaking Syracuse's five-year streak, the Notre Dame men claimed their first ACC title with three of their runners placing among the top 10. Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech powered through the final straight away to win the 8k race with a time of 23:20.9.
The NC State women won their third consecutive ACC Championship after edging out Notre Dame by just one point with a score of 67. Louisville's Dorcas Wasike finished the women's race in 20:08.1 to claim the title.
Next Up: North Carolina will travel just south of their state border for the first time this season on Nov. 9 for the NCAA Southeast Regional in Rock Hill, S.C. The Tar Heels hope to secure some spots in the NCAA Championships at the E.T. Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisc.
