Freshman Enyaeva Michelin earned All-Region cross country accolades after finishing 12th in the NCAA Southeast Regional competition.
Michelin Claims All-Region Honors As Tar Heels Wrap Up XC Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. - After an All-ACC performance at the conference championships in Boston, freshman Enyaeva Michelin topped off her first season with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional and All-Region accolades. While Michelin continued her impressive streak as Carolina's top women's finisher, both teams — despite less than ideal conditions — fought their way through the muddy course with the women finishing 14th of 33 teams and the men 11th of 33.
"Enyaeva was terrific," UNC head cross country coach Andrea Grove-McDonough said. "There was only one other freshman in front of her. Twelfth in the region. It was a fast race up front today too so really accomplished women up front today. And honestly she was a little bit injured coming off her senior year out of high school so really came into the fall not in terrific shape, again, coming off injury. So she was a ways back at this time three months ago so she's come so far if you just look at her first race, real big 6k test, to where she is now is an incredible jump. Something to be super excited about."
The four nationally-ranked men's programs seized the top four regional spots, but Carolina redeemed themselves against ACC opponent Duke and again bested Clemson. The men also missed ninth place by a mere four points and tenth by just one point. Though the women finished just 14th, some individual competitors made significant strides in their careers as four women clocked personal best 6k times.
"I think that all the athletes ran tough," Grove-McDonough said. "The conditions were really tough and I felt like they ran with a lot of heart, but right now on the men's side, we're missing a low stick which would make a big difference for us. But I think the men and women have come a long way in just the few months since our staff came on board so we're putting the pieces together. This is definitely a work in progress. This is not where we want to be as a program in terms of where we finished, but given where we started the year and given those expectations, I felt good about the way the athletes competed today. I was proud of them for that and we're just looking to make sure we can keep on taking steps forward so that next season we're kind of out of the 10th, 11th area and moving up to the middle sort of five range in the region and just showing people that we're building something. So this is where we start."
The women were the first to line up on the day. Enyaeva Michelin and Lindsey Lanier clocked personal-best times of 20:19.3 for 12th and 21:25.1 for 68th, and the three other contributors to the Tar Heels' score all finished within six seconds of each other. Ashley Smith ran the 6k course in a career best 21:54.0 for 107th, Casey Greenwalt placed 113th in her final cross country appearance with a time of 21:58.1 and Charlotte Bassett rounded out the score with a 117th-place finish and a time of 21:59.8.
On the men's side, Nick Golebiowski made the most of his last NCAA cross country performance and finished 36th out of 232 athletes to claim his second top finish for Carolina this season. Alex Milligan clocked Carolina's second-best time for the third straight meet as he crossed the finish line in 31:13.1 for 45th and Jeremy Brown was right there with him as he finished the course in 48th place with a time of 31:13.9. After sitting out at the ACC Championships, Brodie Modini made an impressive run despite battling injury and illness. Modini finished 69th with 31:45.1 on the clock and Matt Thornton scored the final points for his team, running 32:04.9 for 93rd.
"I think Coach McDonough and Coach Lockhart have done a great job coming in almost right in the middle of the season and assembling this group of athletes and really converting them into a tougher group," said Harlis Meaders, Carolina's head coach and director of track and field and cross country. "We've had some good races throughout the season. At the conference meet, we underperformed a little bit, but the kids bounced back and I think credit needs to go to Coach McDonough and Coach Lockhart for really bringing that group back together. It's exciting — it's really exciting. I think we're one or two athletes away from making a big jump not only in the conference but also on the national level. Recruiting is going to be paramount to everything that we do, but I think a big round of applause needs to go to the kids we have now. I think they've gone through a tough transition. I think they've handled it really well. I think they found their voice and we're finally starting to see what we knew they were always capable of doing."
