#5 Carolina Tops Winthrop

CHAPEL HILL - The fifth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team began the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Friday afternoon with a strong 4-0 victory over Winthrop (0-1) at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
To stay perfect on the year, the Tar Heels didn't drop a set and improved their season record to 5-0.
In doubles play, it took North Carolina just 19 minutes to collect the first point of the afternoon against the Eagles.
The 37th ranked duo of Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford won 6-0 on court two, while Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones notched a 6-0 victory on court three.
The first singles point came courtesy of No. 18 Aney, who picked up a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four. Shortly after, Daavettila wrapped up a win of her own on court five, another 6-1, 6-1 advantage.
The final point of the afternoon by Alexa Graham sealed the team win. The sophomore won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 on court five, to ensure a perfect afternoon for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina will face Illinois on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The winner advances to the National Indoor Championship on Feb. 9-12 in Madison, Wisconsin.
