Carolina Sweeps Illinois To Reach National Indoors

CHAPEL HILL - No. 5 North Carolina took down Illinois, 4-0, on Saturday as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The victory sends the Tar Heels (6-0) to the ITA Indoor National Championships that runs Feb. 9-12 in Madison, Wisconsin. UNC has reached the 16-team championship every year since its first appearance in the tournament in 2002. Carolina has enjoyed unmatched success in the event in recent years, winning titles in 2013 and 2015 and finishing runner-up each of the last two seasons.
The Tar Heels faced a tough battle in doubles against the Fighting Illini. No. 37 Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford was first off with a 6-3 win over Daniel Novak and Sasha Belaya on court two.
Moments later, with Carolina trailing on court one, the tandem of Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones pulled out a 6-4 win over Asuka Kawai and Mia Rabinowitz on court three to secure the opening point for the Tar Heels.
No. 38 Daavettila won 6-1, 6-2 over Rabinowitz on court three and Graham won in similar fashion, 6-3, 6-2, over Emilee Duong on court five. The clinching match came down to either Makenna Jones on court two or either Jessie Aney on court four. It was Jones that wound with the winner, 6-4, 6-3, over Jaclyn Switkes.
