Tar Heels to Host Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Drive on Oct. 18
October 10, 2017 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Just days after the North Carolina volleyball team returned home from the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan last month, the island of Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. In an effort to help support the people of Puerto Rico, the Tar Heels are teaming up with fellow Clasico participant NC State to host a Hurricane Relief Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Fans of both teams are encouraged to bring clothing, flashlights and other useful items to the NC State match, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Carmichael Arena.
"We are honored to have our team initiate this drive on behalf of our two ACC volleyball teams," said head coach Joe Sagula. "We met so many wonderful people on our trip to Puerto Rico last month and are saddened by all of the devastation that they have endured. This is just a small way we can support those in the volleyball community and their families and friends and let them know that we are thinking about them."
Requested items include:
- Clothing
- Flashlights
- First-aid kits
- Batteries
- Battery-powered radios
- Battery-powered fans
- Bug spray
Donation bins will be located inside the main entrance of Carmichael Arena, labeled by item type.
"We want to be able to help any way we can to get our friends back to living their normal, daily lives," said Sagula. "We encourage everyone from the North Carolina community to bring a donation to help all of the people who need our support."
