Late Goals Lift Heels Past Nova 2-0
September 4, 2016 | Women's Soccer
DURHAM, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's soccer team got late goals from Annie Kingman and Zoe Redei to lift it past Villanova 2-0 in the Duke Nike Classic at Koskinen Stadium. With the victory the Tar Heels improved to 4-0-1 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 1-4 on the campaign. The match was played before a crowd of 1,476 fans. #7 Duke defeated #9 Minnesota in Sunday's second game 1-0.
The eighth-ranked Tar Heels were coming off a hard-fought double overtime scoreless draw with seventh-ranked Duke Friday night but Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance made liberal use of his bench and eventually got a goal and two assists from his substitutes as the Heels posted their fourth clean sheet in five games this season.
The Tar Heels got on the board at the 71:13 mark on a goal set up by freshman striker Madison Schultz. The Washington State native got behind the Wildcat defense only to see her shot saved by Villanova goalkeeper Emmalee Meyer. Schultz stayed with the ball, however, tracking it down near the end line in the box and sending a ball perfectly into the path of junior midfielder Annie Kingman who blasted a shot from 15 yards out into the left side of the goal to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal scored by Kingman since she scored twice against Fresno State on August 23, 2015 in a 7-0 Tar Heel victory.
Carolina gained separation in the 87th minute when Zoe Redei scored her third goal of the season off an assist by Ru Mucherera. After a goal kick by Meyer, Mucherera skied to head the ball down and into the path of Redei who had split two defenders. She took a touch to go past the Villanova goalkeeper and then calmly tapped the ball into an empty net for the 2-0 lead.
Carolina finished the game with a 15-10 edge in shots against the Wildcats. UNC had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Carolina also had an edge in corner kicks 5-1. Toughest part of the stat sheet for the Heels was the 16 fouls committed by UNC, many of which led to the most dangerous offensive situations for Villanova.
Emmalee Meyer played all 90 minutes in goal for Villanova and made seven saves while allowing two goals. UNC sophomore Samantha Leshnak made her first career start for the Heels and played the opening half, making two saves. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Lindsey Harris played the second 45 minutes for the Tar Heels and also made two saves.
Four Tar Heels were named to the 2016 Duke Nike Classic All-Tournament Team - redshhirt senior goalkeeper Lindsey Harris, redshirt junior defender Maggie Bill, junior midfielder Megan Buckingham and freshman striker Zoe Redei.
The Tar Heels will travel to the West Coast next weekend where they will play two nationally-ranked teams from the Pacific 12 Conference. Carolina plays at UCLA Friday at 10 p.m. EDT and then at USC Sunday at 4 p.m. EDT. Both games will be nationally televised on the Pac 12 Network.Team Stats
