Clemson & Carolina Battle To 1-1 Draw At Riggs Field

CLEMSON, S.C. – In a hard-fought 110 minutes of ACC women's soccer Sunday afternoon, #13 Clemson and #18 North Carolina battled to 1-1 tie before 521 fans at Historic Riggs Field.
Annie Kingman scored in the 24th minute for the Tar Heels and Clemson got the equalizer in the 32nd minute from Emily Byorth. Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard the remainder of the way as the two teams basically played even over the second 45 minutes and overtime periods.
UNC is now 6-2-2 on the season overall and 1-1-1 in the ACC heading into a match next Sunday at #2 Virginia. Clemson is now 8-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are now 29-1-1 all-time versus the Tigers. The series began in 1994. Clemson's win in the series came in 2000.
For the game, Clemson finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots and Clemson had seven shots on goal to North Carolina's six. Lindsey Harris continued her tremendous play in goal for UNC with six saves while Kailen Sheridan made five saves for the Tigers.
The Tigers outshot the Tar Heels 10-3 in the first half of play but Lindsey Harris made four saves to keep Carolina equal after the first 45 minutes.
UNC took the lead 1-0 at 23:05 on the fourth goal of the season by junior midfielder Annie Kingman. She was assisted on the tally by Kasey Parker and Bridgette Andrzejewski. Kingman finished from the top of the 18-yard box with a diagonal shot inside the right post.
After UNC took the lead in the game, Clemson pressured the Tar Heel goal for the remainder of the first half. Eventually Clemson broke through with the third goal of the season by Emily Byorth at 31:14 of the match, assisted by Sam Staab and Catrina Atanda. The goal came off a nicely designed play off a free kick with Byorth scoring on a header after off a cross from the far post by Staab.
Harris had to make a couple of nifty saves late in the opening period to keep the Heels level going into the final 45 minutes.
UNC outshot the Tigers 7-6 in the second 45 minutes. The most significant save of the second half came on a shot by Jeni Erickson in the 70th minute which Harris parried over the bar at the last second.
Sheridan made three saves in the first overtime to keep the game tied including back-to-back stops on Andrzejewski and Madison Schultz in the 99th minute. The only shot of the second half came by Clemson's Jenna Weston in the 108th minute.
The Tar Heels return to action next Sunday when they play at #2-ranked Virginia at 1 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The match will be nationally televised on ESPNU.Team Stats
