October 19, 2016 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina is now 10-2-2 on the season, and finishes the non-conference portion of its season 6-1-1.
Carolina jumped on its front foot in the final 10 minutes of regulation, registering seven shots in that time frame. Walker Hume's header in the 84th minute seemed destined to cross the line, but keeper Kevin Shields made a lunging, desperation save to keep the match scoreless.
In total, the Tar Heels had 13 shots alone in the second half with Shields making eight stops.
As the match moved into extra time, Zach Wright, who leads the club with four game winners this season, appeared on his way to a fifth but his breakaway shot was saved by Shields in the final 10 seconds of the first overtime session.
Shields made his 10th and final save of the evening on a Nils Bruening header in the 108th minute, as the Heels settled for its second scoreless match of the season. Charleston is 3-6-3.
Carolina owned a 17-8 edge in shots, and a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
UNC keeper James Pyle registered his eighth clean sheet of 2016, making two saves in 110 minutes of action.
North Carolina returns home to host No. 23 Virginia Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tar Heels will honor its seniors in a brief ceremony before playing their final regular-season match at Fetzer Field.
