Carolina Blasts Past Yale Bulldogs

CHAPEL HILL—Despite the frosty conditions Friday afternoon, the No. 5 North Carolina women's tennis team fired off a 4-0 victory over No. 68 Yale during the first day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels (5-0) started off the matchup with the Bulldogs (0-1) with a quick doubles victory.
Second-ranked duo Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay easily handled Tina Jiang/Madeleine Hamilton 6-0. Carter and Kay took home the doubles title in the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship in Las Vegas last weekend after taking down fourth-ranked Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith of USC.
No. 16 doubles team Kate Vialle/Jessie Aney defeated Ree Ree Li/Valerie Shklover 6-1 to secure the doubles point for the Tar Heels.
In the singles matchups, No. 6 Carter defeated Jiang 6-0, 6-2 to put the Tar Heels up 2-0. Carter entered the match fresh from her singles title in the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship, her 100th career victory as a Tar Heel.
Marika Akkerman defeated Courtney Amos 6-2, 6-0 on Court 5 to put Carolina just one point away from the victory.
No. 112 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer sealed the win for the Tar Heels with a victory over Carol Finke 6-2, 6-0.
The Tar Heels will face No. 48 Tulsa at 3:30 p.m. Saturday after the Golden Hurricane's 4-0 victory over No. 53 Marshall. The consolation match between Marshall and Yale will take place immediately following the Carolina/Tulsa match.
