
UNC Blows Past Tulsa At ITA Kick-Off

The victory sends the defending champion Tar Heels to the ITA Indoor National Championships that runs Feb. 5-8 in Madison, Wisc.
No. 88 Whitney Kay was first to land in the winners circle in singles play. The senior picked up a 6-0, 6-1 over No. 95 Ksenia Laskutova, giving Carolina a 2-0 edge over the Golden Hurricane.
On court five, Marika Akkerman earned a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Yelena Nemchen.
Minutes later, No. 6 Hayley Carter clinched the win with a 6-0 6-2, win over Saana Saarteinen on court one.
In doubles, second ranked Carter and Kay breezed to a 6-1 victory on court 1. The Golden Hurricane quickly answered with a 6-2 win on court 2, meaning the opening point of the match would be decided on court three.
Carolina's Ashley Dai and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer took a 5-3 lead with a service break of Tulsa, but the Golden Hurricanes answered with their own break to stay in the match 5-4. However, the Heels prevailed on a 23-shot rally to break Tulsa once again to take the match 6-4 and a 1-0 lead over the Golden Hurricane.
Carolina hosts UNCG and NC Central on Wednesday at 2 and 6:30 p.m., respectively. The Tar Heels will also welcome No. 10 Texas A&M to Chapel Hill on Sunday, Jan. 31 for a noon match.
