Tar Heels Benefit From First Scrimmage
August 15, 2015 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After five days of practices and various team activities, the UNC field hockey team faced outside competition for the first time in the 2015 preseason on Saturday afternoon, when the Tar Heels hosted Liberty at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
The teams played a full 70-minute game, an overtime period and a shootout, gaining valuable experience in a variety of game situations.
“It was fun to play everybody and have some glimpses of what we could become as a team,” said UNC coach Karen Shelton. “I'm really feeling great about the freshman class and how they've integrated, and our senior leadership is doing a fantastic job.
“We started off a little slow but things picked up in the second half. I feel like we're going to be a little more versatile than we've been in the past and it was fun to see everyone out on the field today.”
UNC scrimmages against outside competition again next Saturday (Aug. 22), when Old Dominion will visit Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels open the season on Aug. 29 at Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
