TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Not even mother nature could stop the second-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team from its continued domination in 2015. Weather forced a delay between the doubles and singles matches, but the result was still a 5-2 Tar Heel win over Florida State on Thursday afternoon.
North Carolina (22-0, 10-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) notched wins on courts one and two in doubles to secure the opening point. 13th-ranked Jamie Loeb and Caroline Price clinched the 1-0 lead with an 8-5 victory over 40th-ranked Gabriella Castaneda and Emily Fanning on court No. 1.
Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay, the 33rd ranked doubles tandem, won 8-5, before the Seminoles rallied with a win on court three.
Poor weather forced the singles matches indoors at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, but that seemed to have little effect on the Tar Heels. No. 9 Loeb cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 93 Daneika Borthwick on court one.
FSU (11-8, 4-6) cut its deficit to 2-1 with a victory on court four, however, No. 17 Carter won 6-1, 6-2 on court two, followed by Kate Vialle and No. 18 Price in straight sets on courts six and three, respectively, to clinch the win for the visiting Tar Heels.
Carolina will now turn its attention to Miami on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
