Heels Edge Aggies In Close 4-3 Victory

HOUSTON – Ashley Dai sealed the victory for the Tar Heels as No. 3 North Carolina edged No. 17 Texas A&M 4-3 in a top-25 matchup Sunday afternoon at the Galleria Tennis & Athletic Club.
After dropping the match last year to the Aggies 4-3 in Chapel Hill, the Heels came ready to play in Texas with a clean sweep of the doubles matches.
Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay snatched the first match win with a 6-1 victory over Stefania Hristov and Eva Paalma.
No. 13 Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle clinched the doubles point for the Heels with a 6-2 win over No. 21 Ines Deheza and Rachel Pierson.
After Carolina secured the point, Loeb and Price finished their match with Rutuja Bhosale and Saska Gavrilovska with a 6-3 triumph.
No. 31 Carter continued her dominant singles play by blanking No. 56 Rachel Pierson in the first set 6-0, followed by a close 6-4 second-set defeat to grab the second point for the Heels.
No. 8 Loeb edged No. 29 Saska Gavrilovska 6-4 in the first set and collected the third point for Carolina with a 6-1 victory in the second.
Dai moved to 7-2 on the season with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Stefania Hristov to win the match for the Tar Heels.
Vialle fell in her match to Eva Paalma 2-6, 1-6 to give Texas A&M their first point of the match.
Kay lost her match to Ines Deheza after a long battle to make it 3-2 Carolina. She won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second 4-6, forcing a third set where she fell 4-6. Kay moved to 1-1 in three-set matches this season and 7-2 overall.
No. 22 Price dropped only her fourth match of the season after a 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 loss to Rutuja Bhosale to tie up the match at three all.
The Tar Heels are headed to Charlottesville, Va. next weekend for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
