UNC Tops Oklahoma State At National Indoors
February 6, 2015 | Women's Tennis
“Oklahoma State's a very talented team and they're very good throughout their lineup, so it was very exciting for us to get through in pretty short fashion,” said North Carolina head coach Brian Kalbas. “It's a quick turnaround [to tomorrow], if we can play as composed as we did today and start off as well as we did in doubles and singles, we'll be in good shape.”
Carolina, the three-seed in the 16-team field, made quick work in doubles with victories on courts two and three to grab an early 1-0 advantage over the Cowgirls.
Jamie Loeb and Caroline Price finished first on court two, and Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay followed right after on court three. Both tandems won by identical 6-1 scores.
In singles, eighth-ranked Loeb topped No. 10 Viktoriya Lushkova, 6-2, 6-1, to make it 2-0 in favor of the Tar Heels.
“Jamie has played her twice [previously], she played her at junior Wimbledon on grass and she played her last fall at All-Americans,” Kalbas said. “Viktoriya is very, very good. You can't give her a lot of rhythm and timing and Jamie did a good job of rushing her and taking her time away, moving her and pressing her forehand.
“Jamie played well, Jamie played focused. You can't let Viktoriya get ahead; she's a really good frontrunner, and Jamie didn't let that happen.”
Oklahoma State picked up a victory on court four to tighten up the match, but the onslaught was already in progress with Carolina firmly in control on three other courts.
Ashley Dai made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Karyn Guttormsen on court five, and No. 22 Caroline Price clinched the win on court three with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over No. 53 Katarina Adamovic.
Katie Vialle topped Carla Tur Mari, 6-1, 6-3, on court six to close out the festivities.
UNC will play Miami in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Hurricanes earned a 4-1 win over No. 6 seed Alabama on Friday morning.
