Carolina Shuts Out Miami Redhawks in Neutral-Site Matchup
September 21, 2014 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE - A day after suffering its first loss of the season, the UNC field hockey team bounced back to pick up its second shutout of the year, 3-0 over Miami (Ohio) in a neutral-site matchup at Louisville's Trager Stadium.
Top-ranked UNC is now 6-1 overall, while the Redhawks fell to 2-7.
"We were happy to get a shutout against a spirited and hard-working Miami team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "They packed it in and we had to figure out a way to get around them."
Senior Loren Shealy scored the gamewinner in the fifth minute of play, on a penalty corner deflection with the assist to senior Charlotte Craddock. UNC made it 2-0 on another penalty corner with no time remaining in the first half. Senior Samantha Travers scored the goal, assisted by Shealy and junior Emily Wold.
UNC's final goal came in the 54th minute from junior Nina Notman, who carried the ball into the circle and sent a hard shot past Miami keeper Alysa Xavier.
Carolina's defense held the Redhawks to just one shot and no penalty corners.
"We felt like their corner attack was very dangerous so our goal was to limit their penalty corner opportunities," Shelton said. "I'm pleased that we didn't give one up."
The game marked the first time this season that UNC has held an opponent without a corner. One shot was the fewest by a Tar Heel opponent this season.
On Saturday, the Tar Heels fell 3-2 at Louisville for their first loss of the season, so Sunday marked the first time they've been called upon to bounce back after a defeat. "It's OK to lose a game, but what's a crime is not to learn from it," Shelton said. "We will learn from that loss. Louisville played a great game against us and we didn't respond as well as I would have liked. We're going to get everyone's best shot and we've got to be ready every game."
Next up for UNC is a trip to Boston. The Tar Heels play at Boston College on Friday and meet Connecticut in a neutral-site game (played at B.C.) next Sunday, Sept. 28.
