CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 9/11 Florida State clinched the sweep of North Carolina with a 5-1 win Monday night on ESPNU.
Lacy Waldrop earned her third win of the series, retiring four batters while giving up just three hits to lead the Seminoles as the Tar Heels were swept for the first time since 2011. FSU took Sunday's doubleheader with a 6-0 shutout in game one and a 5-3 win in game two.
"We weren't expecting to go 0-3 in the series, but there are some good things we can take from it," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Lacy Waldrop deserves credit. She's definitely the best pitcher we've faced and definitely one of the best in the nation."
"Florida State beat us hitting, they beat us scoring runs, and they beat us on the mound. They deserved to win the games. But going forward, we need to know that we're still a good team. Our freshman pitching staff did a fantastic job, and our defense did really well. We have to pick up where we left off, learn from these games, and make some adjustments," Papa said.
UNC posted a run in the first, ensuring FSU wouldn't get a second shutout in the series. Aquilla Mateen led the game off with a bunt single, advanced to second on a passed ball and then moved to third on a ground out by Amy Nece. Kristen Brown then hit a sac fly to center to score Mateen.
FSU was quick to answer, scoring three runs in the second as Briana Hamilton hit her second three-run homer of the series.
With bases loaded in the third, Alex Powers hit an RBI single down the left field, and then Courtney Senas hit a solo home run to left center to tack on one final run in the fourth.
Lori Spingola pitched two innings for the loss, giving up three hits and four walks. Lauren Batten struck out three in five innings of work, giving up six hits and one walk while surrenduring just one run.
Up Next: Carolina travels to Charlotte for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday and then heads to Virginia for an ACC series with the Cavaliers on Saturday and Sunday.
