
Fencing Back In Action At Penn State

The UNC men's and women's fencing teams returned to action Sunday after the month-long break, competing at the Penn State Invite in University Park, Pa. The Carolina men finished the day 3-2 while the women were 1-4. In addition to the Tar Heels and Nittany Lions, the field included Columbia, Penn, Haverford, the Drew men and the Temple women.
For the Tar Heel men, the day's highlight was a 15-12 win over Penn. UNC also beat Haverford 18-9 and Drew 26-1, and fell to Columbia 20-7 and host Penn State 21-6. Among the top performers for Carolina were Sam Austin (12-2 on the day) and Gordon Long (8-7) in men's sabre, Maxwell Tice-Lewis (6-4) and Daniel Giles (7-5) in men's epee, and Evan Philpot (4-4) and Deven Desai (5-8) in men's foil.
The Tar Heel women earned their win 16-11 over Haverford. They fell to Penn 20-7, Temple 17-10, Columbia 21-6 and Penn State 18-9. Individual leaders were Gillian Litynski (10-4) and Caitlin Malone (6-7) in women's sabre, Amanda Lalezarian (8-7) and Gabrielle D'Astoli (6-9) in women's foil, and Kacie Albert (5-10) in women's epee.
"Not a bad first meet after a long layoff," UNC coach Ron Miller said. "Going into the meets we had a few injuries and illnesses, but everyone who competed did their best."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the North American Cup Jan. 17-20 in Virginia Beach, Va. Competition will take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
