Tar Heel Men Split Squad To Compete At NYU And Penn

The UNC men's fencing team split up on Saturday to face tough competition at a pair of meets in the Northeast, the NYU Invitational in New York City and in the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Carolina's women will compete on Sunday at the Philadelphia Invitational.
In New York on Saturday, UNC came out of the day 2-5, with the losses to top-ranked Columbia, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 6 Ohio State and Yale. The Tar Heels started the day against No. 1 Lions, winning sabre 5-4 and coming close in epee (CU 5-4) before falling 17-10. Next came another competitive loss, 15-12 to Yale. UNC won sabre 7-2 but dropped the other two weapons.
Notre Dame and Ohio State swept all three weapons to win 23-4 and 21-6 before the Tar Heels finished the day with wins over Wayne State (23-4) and host NYU (14-13).
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Tar Heels were 3-2, with wins over New Jersey Institute of Technology, Lafayette and Haverford. Carolina started the day with a 14-13 loss to Sacred Heart, highlighted by an 8-1 result in sabre. UNC got a win in the next round (18-9 over NJIT) before falling to Johns Hopkins, again by a 14-13 score.
The Tar Heels then closed out the day with convincing wins over Lafayette (24-3) and Haverford (17-10).
