WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Elizabeth Stephens scored on a penalty corner goal in the 51st minute of play to give No. 2 North Carolina an Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey victory against host Wake Forest Friday night at Kentner Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play with the win. The Demon Deacons fell to 2-8 (0-3).
"I thought it was a little bit of a disjointed game, not a lot of solid possession, but Wake Forest had a lot to do with that," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "Much like Old Dominion, they put immediate pressure on us and did a nice job of taking us out of our comfort zone, so hats off to them.
"I'm delighted with the team to get a shutout against a very good Wake Forest team. We continue to do a nice job defensively and we'd like to be scoring some more goals, but Wake Forest prevented us from doing that tonight."
The only goal of the game came on UNC's first penalty corner of the second half and sixth of the night. It was Stephens' s sixth goal of the season, and junior Katie Ardrey and senior Katelyn Falgowski assisted on the play.
Stephens also had the gamewinner in UNC's first ACC contest, a 1-0 double-overtime win over Duke on Sept. 24. She shared ACC Player of the Week honors for her play in that game.
Carolina totaled 10 shots in the game, while Wake managed two. The Tar Heels had seven penalty corners to four by WFU.
Next up for UNC is a home game on Sunday against Radford. Game time at Francis E. Henry Stadium is 1 p.m.
The Tar Heels will be without Falgowski, the team caption, who departs Saturday morning to join the U.S. National Team in preparation for the Pan American Games, to be played Oct. 19-29 in Guadalajara, Mexico. She will miss the next seven games, rejoining her college team for the Oct. 30 game at Old Dominion.
"We wish Katelyn well as she goes to represent the U.S.," said Shelton, herself a former National Team member. "We're viewing it as an opportunity. We have the chance to really make a statement without her and grow as a team without her and then when she comes back it's going to be a huge gift going into the postseason. So we're excited about the challenge of winning without her and we wish her well and we'll be looking forward to having her back."
