CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Seven different players scored and the second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team earned its fourth consecutive shutout Sunday with a 7-0 win over visiting Radford (5-7). The shutout is the eighth in this season's 12 games for Carolina, now 11-1 overall.
"I'm proud of our team for playing such great team defense," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It is a priority for this team to play defense and we take pride it in."
Less than three minutes into the game, the Tar Heels got the only goal they'd need to go with that defense. Junior Kelsey Kolojejchick, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, scored her team-high 12th goal of the season when she sent a ball in from the right side of the circle and it glanced a Highlander defender before rolling into the cage. In the seventh minute, UNC made it 2-0 on a penalty corner goal by redshirt freshman Samantha Travers, assisted by Katie Ardrey and Teryn Brill. In the 14th minute, junior Katie Plyler got a ball from classmate Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany and sent it to the right of Radford keeper Sidney Encarnacion to put UNC up 3-0, which is where the score stood at halftime.
Early in the second half, freshman Loren Shealy, who made the first start of her career as the Tar Heels played their first of seven games without team captain Katelyn Falgowski, scored her third goal of the season. Highlander goalkeeper Rebecca May, who played the second half for RU, stopped two shots by the Tar Heels, but Shealy grabbed the rebound again and this time was able to get the ball into the cage.
The fifth goal came in the 54th minute, when Gaudioso Radvany tipped in a shot by sophomore Marta Malmberg on a penalty corner. In the 60th minute, freshman Sophie Rudolph dribbled into the circle and scored her first goal in a Carolina uniform to put UNC up 6-0. The final goal was by junior Meghan Lyons, who got a cross from Shealy and put the ball in the left corner of the cage for her second goal of the season.
UNC finished with 18 shots to four by Radford. The Tar Heels had six penalty corners to RU's two.
"We had some sloppy moments, but we did regroup," Shelton said. "What you want is games to identify areas you need to work on. Our fundamental skills need work and we are determined to get better. And we are determined to make a huge step without Katelyn Falgowski. We know we don't have her, and it is a challenge for us and an opportunity for us to grow. I think this team understands that and we're looking forward to making progress. "
Falgowski played Friday in a 1-0 ACC win at Wake Forest then left on Saturday to join the U.S. National Team as it prepares for the Pan American games in Mexico later this month. A senior midfielder, she will rejoin the Tar Heels for the Oct. 30 game at Old Dominion.
Next up for Carolina is an Atlantic Coast Conference battle against Boston College, which visits Henry Stadium on Saturday at 11 a.m.
