UNC Defeats Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Ma. - North Carolina defeated Boston College 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-22) from Power Gymnasium. Senior setter Erica Behm registered 20 assists and senior libero Kaylie Gibson tallied 15 digs against the Eagles. UNC improves to 10-3 (2-0) as Boston College falls to 4-10 (0-3).
Carolina fell behind 5-3 in the opening set on consecutive block assists by Boston College's Krystle Higgins and Val Mattaliano. The Eagles later extended their lead to 11-8 with a kill from Melissa McTighe. After calling timeout, the Tar Heels won nine of the next 13 points to pull ahead 17-15, their largest lead of the frame, forcing Boston College to call timeout. UNC continued to pull away ultimately closing out set one (25-20) on an attack error by the Eagles. Tia Gaffen led the Tar Heels with four kills in the frame.
It was Carolina who took the early lead in set two, going up 7-3 off a service ace from Ece Taner. The Eagles rallied to cut the Tar Heel lead in half (9-7) but UNC countered with a 4-0 spurt, capped by a Heather Henry kill to increase the lead to six (13-7). Carolina tallied five more unanswered points out of an Eagles' timeout en route to its largest lead of the match at 18-7. UNC captured set two going away by a score of 25-16. Henry registered five kills on a .444 hitting percentage and Kaylie Gibson chipped in five digs.
Boston College leaped out to an early 4-1 advantage in the third stanza, before Carolina evened the score at 6-all after three consecutive attack errors by the Eagles. With the score was knotted again, this time at 9-all, UNC strung together four unanswered points highlighted by two kills from Kayla Berringer and a service ace by Emily McGee to take a 13-9 lead. Boston College later called its final timeout of the set with UNC leading by six (19-13) and battled back to trim the deficit to two at 21-19. Carolina finished off the third set (25-22) capturing match point on a block by Berringer and Gaffen.
Carolina next travels to Clemson, S.C., to face Clemson Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
