"It was like I thought it would probably be, going to down to the end. I didn't think it would have such wild swings in there, but I thought it would stay close the whole way. I try not to waste too much of my time thinking about those kind of things, to be honest with you. [Casper] Ware was a low force in the first half. I thought we were a little better in the second half. They didn't shoot it quite as well in the second half. In the first half they were seven for thirteen. In the second half they were zero for eight. They also helped us by missing some, I'd be false if I didn't say something.
"Reggie [Bullock] was huge. I was very discouraged with some of the things going on out there. Dexter [Strickland] was one for four, Kendall [Marshall] was one for six, P.J. [Hairston] was zero for three, and thank goodness Reggie came in and decided he was going to make some shots for us from the perimeter. He's a youngster who's going through a lot of tough times, but I was really pleased for him today. He's worked exceptionally hard to not be just a shooter but to be a good defender also. Congratulations to Z [Tyler Zeller], for making the thousand-point club. In the second half, I think it was Reggie and Harrison and Z and John making big shots for us, but in the first half I was extremely, extremely disappointed to say the least. But you've got to congratulate them, I knew they wouldn't go away. We got it to eleven and we made a few bonehead plays that made it back to six, but I don't think it ever got under six down the stretch."
On Reggie Bullock's performance:
"He was needed a heck of a lot more than some of his other games, there's no question about that. I like his confidence. I didn't even want to take him out, except for possession on the defensive end. He just couldn't slide his feet, and his gas tank was empty. That's when they called the two-shot foul on him, so I took him out, gave him a breather, and put him back in. I think that six for ten, that helps you most games."
On John Henson's performance:
"I think he made some jump shots, and yet I think that is fool's gold sometimes. Our chances are better with Reggie [Bullock] or Harrison [Barnes] shooting, and John [Henson] rebounding, as opposed to the opposite way. John took one down the stretch that I didn't want him to take, but in the second half I thought he was so much more effective offensively than just shooting jump shots. He got involved defensively. He blocked some shots that were huge for us. John is just getting better and better."
Long Beach State head coach Don Monson
"It's been a long week for the team, between traveling to Kansas, traveling here, and trying to get two days of school in, but I thought they fought really hard. And we aren't here for moral victories. We feel like we can play in these games and sometimes you just have to say that you got beat, and I don't think we lost to them. I think they had to beat us and for that I think that's acceptable. A couple of games this year I think we lost and that's unacceptable. The team really tried to do what we asked for them to do and we just came up short."
UNC Players
Harrison Barnes- on Reggie Bullock's performance: "I think last year with the knee injury it had him a bit discouraged, so being able to come out here and play well in big games is going to help him propel his progression."
Reggie Bullock- on his performance this year: "It's been more consistent this year. Working out with Jackie, getting shots up, and keeping my reps up, I've been able to knock down shots. This year I don't think about my knee at all, my knee is back to one hundred percent. I've been doing the right things for my knee and building a lot of confidence in myself."
Tyler Zeller- on Reggie Bullock's performance: " It was a great uplift for us. The starters were rotating out, and it was great for him to come in and step up like that. He's playing incredibly. All around, he's a great player."
John Henson- on personal offensive improvement: "I think practicing all summer and hitting the shots in the game is something that builds more confidence than anything, and I think that's what I've been doing."
On shooting: "Reggie and I shoot together at the beginning of the game, and I didn't miss today, so it reflected in the game."
