TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--No. 18 Florida State defeated North Carolina, 3-1 (25-16, 12-25, 25-21, 25-21) from Tully Gym to remain perfect in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 14-0 record, 21-4 overall. The Tar Heels fall to 11-4 in conference, 19-7 overall. Senior setter Erica Behm (42 assists, 21 digs) and junior outside hitter Emily McGee (11 kills, 10 digs) each posted double-doubles in the loss.
"It was a hard-fought battle and disappointing that we lost, knowing that statistically we played great in most categories," said head coach Joe Sagula. "Statistically, we out-performed Florida State, but I think the most important thing was our consistency and our level of play set-to-set and within each set.
"This match was the tale of two different teams: we were good in the middle and the end of the match but were not as strong as we needed to be in the beginning and that's what hurt us. But I was really proud of how we fought and continued to work really hard in the third and the fourth sets."
The opening set was tight in the early going, but with the score even at 11-all, Florida State began to pull away, winning seven of the next nine points on their way to a five-point lead (18-13). Carolina closed the deficit to four (20-16) following a service error by FSU, but the Seminoles finished the set on a 5-0 run and grabbed set point (25-16) on a kill by Visnja Djurdjevic. Kaylie Gibson had eight digs in the frame.
Florida State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set, capped by a service ace from Rachel Morgan. UNC called timeout and came out firing, going on a 14-3 run en route to an eight-point advantage (15-7). The Tar Heels led by as many as 13 (24-11), as they cruised to a second-set victory (25-12). Carolina posted a .370 attack percentage in set two and Chaniel Nelson recorded five kills.
UNC began set three with a 3-0 lead, but FSU rallied to go on a 14-4 run and opened up a seven-point advantage (14-7), forcing the Tar Heels to call timeout. Carolina battled back to within one (19-18), following three straight attack errors by the Seminoles and capped by a service ace from Gibson. Still trailing by one (21-20) late in the third, FSU finished the set on a 4-1 run, capturing set point (25-21) on a kill by Sareea Freeman. After hitting -.207 in the second set, the Seminoles bounced back to post a .212 attack efficiency in the third set compared to UNC's .111.
The Seminoles raced out to a 10-2 lead in the fourth set. The Tar Heels rallied to pare the deficit to four (20-16) following an attack error by the Seminoles and a kill by Erica Behm. Carolina later came within two (23-21) after another Seminole attack error, but FSU finished off the set (25-21) and match with a kill by Freeman and a block by Freeman and Elise Walch.
Carolina returns home for it's penultimate home match of the season against Georgia Tech Friday, Nov. 11, at 5:15 p.m. A viewing party of the Carrier Classic between UNC and Michigan State in men's basketball will follow the match with the Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. Admission to both the volleyball match and viewing party is free.
