CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The second-ranked North Carolina field hockey team registered its sixth straight shutout and hit a season high for goals Sunday in a 12-0 win over Appalachian State at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The scoring total, which included goals from eight different players, is UNC's highest in a decade, since a 13-0 win in 2001. The Tar Heels improved to 13-1 with the victory, while the visiting Mountaineers fell to 1-11.
UNC's first goal came 1:24 into the game on the first penalty corner of the afternoon. Junior Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany deflected Caitlin Van Sickle's shot up and into the cage to put Carolina up for good in the second minute of play. After a goal by junior Kelsey Kolojejchick, the two combined again for the same corner play to put UNC up 3-0 in the 19th minute. Less than two minutes later, the Tar Heels drew another corner and this time Van Sickle powered a shot into the goal to make it 4-0. Kolojejchick's second goal of the game and team-high 15th of the season came in the 27th minute on a run assisted by senior Elizabeth Stephens, and put Carolina up 5-0 at halftime.
UNC hadn't had a single penalty stroke all season until Saturday's 2-0 win over Boston College, and the Tar Heels took two more in the second half against the Mountaineers. Both were successful, one by Van Sickle and the other by junior Katie Plyler. Four of the other five second-half goals were by players who had come off the bench, with the exception being junior Katie Ardrey. The midfielder from London scored on a penalty corner give-and-go from Kolojejchick to make it 7-0. After that, it was sophomore Sinead Loughran with her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman Sophie Rudolph. Redshirt freshman Abby Frey then scored her second goal of the season, followed by back-to-back scores by Plyler. Exactly nine minutes after her penalty stroke at the 51:39 mark, she got a rebound on a penalty corner save and sent it back in to make the score 11-0. Carolina's final goal was by redshirt freshman Samantha Travers, who grabbed the ball and shot after the first shot on the play was blocked.
UNC finished with a season-high 38 shots while not allowing a shot or a corner to ASU. The shutout was Carolina's 10th in 14 games this season. "We take a lot of pride in that," said Van Sickle, a back from Wilmington, Del. "In the past few weeks we've really been focusing on defensive pride, so for us to get the shutout with no corners against definitely boosts our confidence. Still, we want to focus on maintaining that and getting better at team defense in general. "
Freshman Sassi Ammer started in goal for UNC and sophomore Caitlin Powers replaced her at halftime. Bridgette Street started and played the first 55 minutes for ASU, making 11 saves. Sarah Anderson replaced her for the final 15 minutes and had 2 saves.
Next up for UNC is a pair of road games. The Tar Heels play a conference contest at Virginia on Saturday then travel to James Madison next Sunday. Carolina's next home game is Oct. 22 against No. 3 Maryland.
