CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Second-ranked North Carolina improved to 4-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey play Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 win over Virginia at University Hall Turf Field. Redshirt freshman Samantha Travers scored two goals and the Tar Heels got one each from juniors Katie Ardrey, Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany and Caitlin Van Sickle, sophomore Meghan Lyons and freshman Sophie Rudolph as they improved to 14-1 on the season. Virginia fell to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in ACC play.
Carolina kicked off the day's scoring with two goals in the 12th minute of play. At the 11:09 point, UNC scored on a penalty corner, with Gaudioso Radvany deflecting in a shot by Van Sickle. Twenty-three seconds later, Travers got her first goal, scoring off the rebound after a saved shot. Just over a minute later, Travers assisted on a score by Rudolph to put UNC up 3-0.
In the 18th minute, Carolina got another penalty corner goal, this one by Van Sickle, assisted by junior Kelsey Kolojejchick. In the 31st minute, Travers received a long pass from sophomore Marta Malmberg and scored to put UNC up 5-0 at halftime.
Just over a minute into the second half, junior Katie Ardrey scored on a shot from the top of the circle and the Tar Heels were up 6-0. But the next goal was Virginia's. The penalty corner score by Elly Buckley broke a six-game shutout streak dating back to the Sept. 21 win over Longwood, the last time Carolina had given up a goal. In the six games between Longwood and Virginia, UNC outscored its opponents 28-0.
In the 60th minute, Lyons collected a rebound from her own shot and put it back for UNC's seventh goal of the day. With seven minutes to play, Buckley added one more goal for Virginia.
Carolina finished the day with 18 shots, 13 of them in the first half, to eight by Virginia. All of the Cavaliers' shots came in the second half, when they also drew all four of their penalty corners. UNC had seven corners on the afternoon.
Next up for the Tar Heels is another road game, at James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
