CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina dropped its first conference match of the season against No. 24 Florida State, 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 19-25, 18-25) at Carmichael Arena. Junior outside hitter Emily McGee posted her fourth consecutive double-double, tallying 18 kills and 15 digs in the loss.
"Florida State had a couple of key players, their No. 3 we really had to watch," said head coach Joe Sagula. "And both of their middle blockers played well--okay offensively--but blocked really well. I didn't see FSU having as good of a night blocking as they did.
"I think we made a some errors and hit the ball into them a lot, instead of finding better angles. And we have got to work on that. That's a big learning process for tonight."
UNC won the opening set, 25-20, as McGee and Kayla Berringer combined for 11 kills in the set. Erica Behm also chipped in 10 assists to help pilot the offense. The Tar Heels registered a .205 attack percentage compared to the Seminoles' .059 and led by as many as six (17-11), their largest advantage of the match. Carolina captured set point on a kill by McGee, assisted by Behm.
FSU answered in the second set, hitting a match-high .294 and tallying five team blocks en route to a 25-20 win. Trailing by seven (14-7), the Tar Heels forged a 9-4 run to pare the Seminole advantage to two (18-16), but that was as close as UNC would come. FSU's Rachel Morgan unleashed a service ace to close out the frame.
Carolina grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the third stanza, capped by a kill from Chaniel Nelson. But FSU countered by taking six of the next eight points to pull ahead of the Tar Heels (6-5). The Seminoles went on to lead by as many as seven (22-15) before taking set point (25-19) on an attack error by McGee.
Florida State carried the momentum from the second and third sets, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth. The Seminoles tallied a .235 hitting percentage and utilized 13 Tar Heel errors to win the fourth set (25-18) and the match, 3-1.
After the loss, The Tar Heels are now second in the conference with a 5-1 record.
UNC next challenges ACC foe Miami Sunday at 1 p.m. from Carmichael Arena. The match against the Hurricanes will feature the Carolina volleyball Kid's Club Day event. A volleyball clinic and autograph session will follow the match and admission is free for everyone.
