CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina swept Boston College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-11) to propel its record to 11-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, 19-5 overall. Emily McGee compiled 12 kills in the win over the Eagles and Kaylie Gibson and Aleksandra Georgieva combined for 25 digs to pilot the defense.
"I was delighted with how well we played and how we continued to improve our quality of play as the match went on," said head coach Joe Sagula. "I think playing back-to-back in this conference is always a challenge. So having had a hard-fought match with Maryland Thursday night, you worry a little coming back 24 hours later whether you can play at that same level. But I was really proud of how well we did that tonight."
The Tar Heels posted a .343 attack percentage on their way to an opening-set victory, 25-16. Holding a two-point advantage (13-11) midway through set one, UNC took seven of the next nine points to go ahead of the Eagles by seven (20-13) on a kill by junior Heather Henry. Boston College surrendered set point on a service error by Brennan Clark. McGee had six kills in the first set and Kayla Berringer added five.
The Eagles found their rhythm in the second frame and led the Tar Heels by two (10-8) early. UNC rallied to even the set at 13-all on a kill by Tia Gaffen. Carolina proceeded to go on a 5-0 run, capped by a Henry kill, to go ahead of Boston College by five (18-13). Senior setter Erica Behm assisted three consecutive kills, including one from Cameron Van Noy, to close out set two (25-16).
Carrying momentum from the first two periods, Carolina cruised to a 25-11 third-set victory to sweep the Eagles, 3-0. The Tar Heels registered a match-high .400 hitting efficiency in set three compared to .029 for Boston College. The Eagles pulled within four (12-8) following a kill from Courtney Castle, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the way. Van Noy again unleashed a kill to capture set point for UNC off an assist from Behm.
Henry collected a season-high six kills on 15 swings with no errors for a .400 hitting percentage. With McGee's 12 kills, she has now recorded double-digit kills in 20 of UNC's 23 matches.
Carolina takes to the road for its next two matches. The Tar Heels play at Miami Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. and then travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida State Nov. 6, at 1 p.m.
