CHAPEL HILL --- The No. 6 North Carolina women's tennis team opened the spring dual match schedule Saturday with a pair of 7-0 wins over Winthrop and Elon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Zoe De Bruycker, Jelena Durisic and Tessa Lyons were double winners for the Tar Heels, who will host the ITA Kickoff Weekend next Saturday and Sunday.
Carolina (2-0) got out to a quick start against the 65th-ranked Eagles, winning two of three doubles matches to take the opening point. No. 8 Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale topped No. 87 Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli, 8-5, at the top position before No. 80 Durisic and Lyons swept Andressa Garcia and Elizaveta Zaytseva, 8-0, at No. 2. Winthrop got its lone victory of the day at No. 3 doubles, with Yasmine Alkema and Julia Breuss outlasting Haley Hemm and De Bruycker in a tiebreak, 9-8 (2).
UNC rolled in singles play, with all six courts finishing in straight-set victories for the Tar Heels. De Bruycker and Durisic finished within moments of one another at Nos. 1 and 3 and Carolina quickly clinched the team victory with wins from Featherston, Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Lyons. The only remaining drama came on court five, where McHale rallied from a second-set hole to win in a tiebreak, 6-1, 7-6 (8).
Carolina proved more dominant in the nightcap, sweeping the three doubles matches and dropping just 13 total games in singles play against Elon.
De Bruycker completed her perfect day at No. 1 singles, defeating Elon's Frida Jansaker, 6-1, 6-0. Durisic and Lyons moved up to positions two and three, respectively, while Jennifer Stone, Hemm and Laura Slater rounded out the lineup to notch straight-set wins.
UNC will now turn its attention to next Saturday's ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Tar Heels will host DePaul, Georgia and VCU in the two day event, with the winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 18-21.
