CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Suzanne Haydel amassed 10 kills and 11 digs to propel North Carolina over Boston College 3-0 in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) Saturday evening at Carmichael Arena. Carolina, who won their season-best eighth straight match, improves to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
Heather Henry registered 12 kills to lead a UNC attack that collected 49 kills and .250 hitting percentage. Middles Christine Vaughen and Shelbey Bleke combined for 17 kills and four blocks. Erica Behm turned in 36 assists to fuel the Tar Heel offense, while Kaylie Gibson posted a match-high 20 digs to anchor the UNC defense.
"It was a good team effort today and we are pleased to be out to a 3-0 start in our league," exclaimed head coach Joe Sagula. "The key in the ACC is to be able to play well back-to-back nights. We need to carry this momentum into next week with another two important matches ahead."
Henry collected half of her total match kills in the first frame as the Tar Heels earned a 25-15 set win. Carolina limited the Eagles to just eight kills and a .118 hitting percentage. The Tar Heels led by as many as nine in the early going and never looked back to jump out to a 1-0 match lead.
Carolina claimed the second frame 25-20 behind five kills and five digs from Haydel. Vaughen tallied four kills and the UNC defense limited Boston College to just a .077 hitting percentage. Carolina trailed just once in the frame and owned a 2-0 lead entering the third and final frame.
The third set was the most competitive of the match featuring six tie scores and three lead changes. With the score knotted at 16, UNC used a 3-0 spurt to find some breathing room. Carolina never led by any more than three to win the third set 25-22 and match 3-0. Henry and Bleke combined for 10 kills, while Behm registered 15 assists in the final frame.
Carolina at 12-4 is off to their best start through their first 16 matches played since a 15-1 mark in 2002. UNC's eight match win streak is the highest since a nine-match spurt in 2008 en route to the ACC Championship. Haydel notched her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season.
UNC returns to action hosting Florida State next Thursday at 7 p.m. and Miami Friday at 7 p.m. from Carmichael Arena.
