Postgame Quotes
North Carolina Head Coach Elmar Bolowich
Opening Statement
"I thought it was a real well played game by both teams. A lot of effort went into this game. Michigan State came out prepared, I give them a lot of credit. They are a well-coached side have wonderful players and are probably one of the better teams we have played all season long and they made it real difficult for us. Very tight defense and I thought their goalkeeper in regulation and the overtime did an outstanding job.
With Enzo's (Martinez) tying goal with only a few seconds left on the clock was a beautiful shot and you can't write a better script than that. Again the winning shot in PKs and Scott (Goodwin) came through for us in goal, making the save that we needed in order to prevail."
On Martinez's winning goal
"I was excited, at the time I thought this was a game that we would have a hard time coming from because things were not going our way. We thought we had a PK then we didn't have a PK. We had a couple of chances in front of the goal but couldn't convert. Kirk (Urso) had a great shot that was saved by the goalkeeper. It seemed to be a day when things wouldn't go our way, you saw all these shots and shots and shots. Some of them were good, while others were rushed but still we couldn't come through but when Enzo pulled that shot it was just relief."

On where the game-tying goal ranks
"First, second, third, fourth, fifth. I never dreamed of anything like this happening to me. I am very blessed by God to have that opportunity. It just shows the work from our whole team with three seconds left that we didn't quit. It's easy to have 10 seconds left and put your head back but we went and we can say this time that we battled until the last second. You can look anywhere and anyone who is wearing the Carolina blue will fight for you, will fight for this college, for this name until the last second."
Michigan State Head Coach Damon Rensing
Opening Statement
"First of all I would like to congratulate the University of North Carolina. As a young coach in this profession, which I am only two years in, you learn as you go and I am learning. Elmar Bolowich does a great job, his demeanor on the bench, how his team plays. North Carolina soccer is a great influence on college soccer. I really want to congratulate them and their program, they played a great game tonight and I want to wish them all the best.
I've never been more proud of a program. Giving up a goal with three seconds left is tough but these guys persevered and were pushed into penalty kicks. We kind of got hit by a double-whammy here, it's tough to give up a goal at the end of the game and then penalty kicks is a crap shoot. Cyrus (Saydee) was special today, we would not have been in penalty kicks if it wasn't for Cyrus who scored a great goal. Avery (Steinlage) was special today, he was a pro. He handled the box well, he distributed, he made great saves and the back four in front of him, Kevin Cope and Colin Givens our two center backs, have been special all year."
