CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Rose Augustin had a goal and two assists and Melissa Henderson added a goal and an assist as seventh-ranked Notre Dame defeated third-ranked North Carolina 4-1 in the third round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament before 1,522 fans at Fetzer Field. The Fighting Irish improve to 18-2-2 on the season and will travel to Stillwater, Okla., next weekend to play sixth-ranked Oklahoma State in the NCAA quarterfinals. North Carolina, the two-time defending NCAA champion, saw its season end at 19-3-2, suffering only its seventh NCAA Tournament loss in history.
North Carolina ended the match with a 15-9 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. But Notre Dame was clinical in finishing its opportunities while the Tar Heels struggled to close out their chances. Nikki Weiss of Notre Dame also played an outstanding match, making five saves.
The three-goal loss marked the first time UNC had dropped a match by more than a single goal in 607 matches dating to a 2-0 loss to Georg Mason on November 24, 1985.
Notre Dame jumped on the Tar Heels quickly, earning a 1-0 lead at 12:49. After a foul at midfield a ball was served into the box. UNC starting goalkeeper Hannah Daly came off her line to seize the ball but she dropped it in traffic and Rose Augustin was johnny-on-the-spot to drive a shot from 15 yards into the empty net for the 1-0 cushion. It was Augustin's 11th goal of the season.
Carolina got an equalizer less than six minutes later as Crystal Dunn scored her ninth goal of the season off an assist by Ranee Premji. Dunn's strike came from 20 yards out as she ripped it into the lower right corner past Weiss at 18:15 of the match.
From then on it was all Notre Dame on the scoreboard. The Fighting Irish got the game-winning goal at the 32:13 mark as Jessica Schuveiller scored her first goal of the season off an assist by Rose Augustin. The goal came off a corner kick that Augustin placed perfectly from the left side to the near post. Schuveiller seized the ball in traffic and punched into the lower left corner of the net past Tar Heel goalkeeper Anna Sieloff who came on in the 17th minute in relief of Daly.
Despite being outshot 10-5 in the second half, Notre Dame extended its lead with a pair of pretty second half goals. The third goal came at 48:27 and was also the third the Fighting Irish scored off restarts. After a foul at midfield Augustin served a ball into the box that bounced and was headed into the back of the net by Melissa Henderson for her 17th goal of the campaign.
Notre Dame finished off the scoring at 76:42 as Ellen Jantsch tallied her second goal of the season off an assist by Henderson. Jantsch ran on to a cross from the left side of the pitch and finished inside the far post from the six-yard line.
Notre Dame improved to 4-1 all-time in games played at Fetzer Field. The Fighting Irish are 3-0 in NCAA Tournament games played at Fetzer Field, also winning in the semifinals in 1995 and the third round in 2007. The Tar Heels still own a 7-3 edge in all-time NCAA Tournament meetings with the Fighting Irish, having won all seven games played at neutral sites.
GAME NOTES
Several rather amazing North Carolina streaks ended with Saturday's loss.
The three-goal margin of defeat marked the first time UNC has lost by more than one goal in a game since November 24, 1985. That loss came at the hands of George Mason 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament championship game in Fairfax, Va. UNC had played 607 matches since last losing by more than one goal.
The four goals allowed by the Tar Heels were the most in a single game since November 16, 1980 when Harvard defeated UNC 5-3 in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the AIAW National Invitational third place game. The three-goal margin of defeat was the most since October 25, 1980 when the Tar Heels fell to Virginia Select 4-1 at Fetzer Field. That also marked the last time UNC surrendered four goals on its home field.
