CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After allowing a counter attack goal in the 26th minute the fourth-ranked North Carolina men's soccer team retaliated with five unanswered goals to claim a 5-1 win over visiting Radford Tuesday night. Martin Murphy led the attack with the first two goals of his career, while Josh Rice and Eddie Ababio each added a pair of assists.
Radford's Aldo Macias found a streaking Iyiola Awosika in the 26th minute with a long ball down the middle of the field after a Carolina attack. The ball neared the top of the box with Awosika battling Drew McKinney and Jalil Anibaba for position to reach the ball.
Goal keeper Scott Goodwin came charging out after the ball and attempted to slide kick the ball away but Awosika was able to touch it past Goodwin and deposit the game-opening goal with ease.
The Tar Heels tested the Radford keeper early as they rattled off eight shots in the opening frame with Michael Farfan coming the closest to scoring in the 17th minute when his shot from the top of the box was saved. Enzo Martinez was on the doorstep waiting for the rebound but Joey Dennis was able to corral the rebound and stop the scoring threat.
Carolina drew a corner kick with less than eight minutes remaining in the opening half and Farfan strolled to the corner looking to help the Tar Heels equalize.
Farfan's corner was deflected out of the box but Eddie Ababio was there to collect the ball and send it back in. Ababio's cross found the chest of Josh Rice who fired a low, driving cross to the feet of Martin Murphy who deposited his first career goal into the back of the net tying the score at 1-1 just before half.
Enzo Martinez and the Carolina attack would come out firing in the second half as the team's leading scorer added to his total in the 50th minute when he finished off another double assist from Ababio and Rice.
Ababio once again found Rice, this time at the top of the box and Rice dropped off a perfect pass to a slashing Martinez who craftily switched the ball to his right foot and toe poked the ball past the keeper to give Carolina the 2-1 lead.
The goals opened up play in the midfield for the Tar Heels to test their shots from distance and that is just what Kirk Urso did in the 63rd minute when he hit a ball with his left foot that bended into the lower right corner of the goal for his third of the season.
The 80th minute saw defender Matt Rose make a run through the Highlander defense and have a shot at putting Carolina three up but his shot from 12 yards out was blocked by a sliding Radford defender but the defender was whistled for a hand ball in the box awarding the Tar Heels a penalty. Head Coach Elmar Bolowich awarded the redshirt freshman's strong run by allowing him to take the penalty which he deposited with ease into the back of the net.
Less than seven minutes later the sophomore Murphy made it 5-1 when he earned the double off a corner. Kirk Urso sent the ball in from the corner kick as a pair of Tar Heels were unable to get to it allowing Murphy to rattle a shot from the top of the box.
The win was the largest for the Tar Heels since a 7-0 win over Stetson on Oct. 28 of last year. The Tar Heels rattled off 23 shots on the night for a 23-6 margin and earned nine corner kicks to Radford's one.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a clash for ACC supremacy as Wake Forest (5-4-1, 3-0-0 ACC) comes to Chapel Hill on Friday for a 7 p.m. tilt.
