CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Michael Farfan found the back of the net in the 21st minute and sophomore goalkeeper Scott Goodwin stopped four shots including a free kick with less than five seconds remaining to preserve a crucial 1-0 win over Wake Forest (5-5-1, 3-1-0 ACC) Friday night. The fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels took control of the ACC with the win as they improved to 8-2-0 on the year and 5-0-0 in conference play.
Wake Forest's Anthony Arena had a chance to provide the equalizer Friday night with just seven seconds remaining in a 1-0 contest. The Demon Deacons drew a foul less than five paces outside the Carolina box as the clock ticked down. Head referee Landis Wiley whistled for a clock stoppage giving Wake Forest a chance to set up the decisive free kick.
As sophomore Scott Goodwin was assembling the wall in front of him, Arenas struck a shot destined for the top left corner of the goal. Goodwin was barely able to parry away the drive to move Carolina to 5-0 in the ACC and five points clear of Maryland.
In a physical match that saw five yellow cards issued and 18 fouls called the Tar Heels kept their head and were able to strike in the 22nd minute when senior Michael Farfan tallied his third goal of the season.
Wake Forest was attacking the Carolina defense early registering four shots through the opening 20 minutes but only challenged Goodwin once when Tolani Ibikunle floated a shot to the back left corner of the goal, Goodwin was equal to the task and punched the ball over the cross bar forcing a corner.
The Demon Deacons were unable to produce anything from the corner resulting in open play. After the Tar Heels drew a foul in the Wake Forest half a ball was sent into the box that was cleared to near midfield.
Stephen McCarthy chested down the ball and fed it to the left corner of the box for Farfan. The Wildomar, Calif., native was one-on-one against a Wake Forest defender.
Farfan darted left then brought the ball back to his right foot and fired a shot over the outstretched arm of Akira Fitzgerald and into the top right corner of the goal for the difference maker.
The Tar Heels nearly made it 2-0 in the 38th minute when Matt Rose found the ball in space and challenged the Wake Forest right back and left him behind as he was one-on-one with Fitzgerald but his shot rolled wide of the goal.
Carolina picked up the intensity in the second half and dominated possession creating several offensive opportunities in the process. The Tar Heels tallied four shots in the span of five minutes late in the half but were never able to get the ball past Fitzgerald.
Farfan blasted a shot that was blocked before Enzo Martinez ran on the ball forcing Fitzgerald into a save in the 71st minute.
Martinez found the ball at his feet again a minute later and beat his defender and fired a ball that nearly dipped into the goal but was a shade to high. Martinez finished the night scoreless but challenged Fitzgerald four times and fired off 10 shots.
The win snapped a four-game winning streak the Demon Deacons held at Fetzer Field dating back to 2000 and helped push Carolina to 5-0-0 in the ACC for the first time in school history.
The Tar Heels will hit the road for a pair next week as they take on Liberty on Tuesday, Oct. 12 before heading to Boston to face No. 17 Boston College on Friday, Oct. 15.
