LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore Enzo Martinez netted his fifth goal of the year as No. 3 North Carolina grabbed a 2-0 win over Liberty Tuesday night in Lynchburg, Va. Sophomore Martin Murphy tallied for the third time in as many matches to provide the final margin for the Tar Heels.
Carolina tried to strike early when in a span of less than a minute the Tar Heels rattled three shots. Kirk Urso put the first shot on frame forcing Liberty's Paul Gilbert to make a save giving Carolina a corner kick.
Urso sent the ball into the box where Enzo Martinez's shot sailed high over the cross bar. Sophomore Jordan Gafa was the next Tar Heel to strike but his shot also sailed high forcing a goal kick.
Freshman Carlos McCrary's header in the 31st minute nearly put Carolina in front but Gilbert was up to the challenge once again keeping the Tar Heels off the scoresheet.
The scoresheet would not stay clean for long as Enzo Martinez made a run down the left side and got past the defense before lofting a shot over Gilbert and into the back of the net for the opening tally of the game.
The goal was Martinez's team-leading fifth of the season and would put the Tar Heels in front to stay.
The defense locked down after the opening goal holding the Flames shotless for the final 12 minutes of the opening half.
McCrary nearly made it 2-0 less than 12 minutes into the second half when he hit a shot that Gilbert was unable to get to but the ball hit the woodwork keeping the deficit just one goal.
Martin Murphy came on in the 68th minute and made an immediate impact as he would challenge the Flames with a shot in the 74th minute that was saved.
Enzo Martinez would find Murphy less than a minute later when he dropped off a pass to the cutting Murphy who fired a shot from just outside the box into the far left corner of the goal.
Liberty would tally two more shots on the night neither of which challenged keeper Scott Goodwin who turned in his fifth shutout of the year while making two saves on the night.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College in Carolina's final ACC road tilt of the year.
