Dixon Brings Carolina Back To Draw At Boston College

NEWTON, Mass. - Alex Dixon struck from five yards out with just over 20 minutes remaining to bring No. 3 Carolina back from a one-goal deficit at No. 18 Boston College Friday night as the Tar Heels earned a hard-fought road draw after playing a pair of scoreless overtime periods. Carolina owns a 9-2-1 record on the year and a 5-0-1 ACC mark, while Boston College is 6-2-4 overall and 1-1-3 in conference play.
oston College struck less than 20 minutes into Friday night's conference clash at the BC Soccer Complex when Conor Fitzpatrick tallied his fifth goal of the season when he settled a shot from 30 yards out to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 20th minute.
Fitzpatrick received a pass from Patrick Chinn before firing the shot past goalkeeper Scott Goodwin in just the third shot of the match. Each team registered one shot apiece through the opening 20 minutes.
The Tar Heels started to form an attack after going down by a goal recording three shots before the halftime whistle. Leading the way was Josh Rice who came on for Martin Murphy just after goal and fired two shots in the offensive end.
Senior Eddie Ababio came out firing in the second half tallying a pair of shots in the opening five minutes, the latter forced Boston College's Justin Luthy into a save.
Jalil Anibaba came up in the 65th minute looking to score off a Kirk Urso corner but after settling the ball Anibaba's shot sailed high over the goal but it signaled the beginning of the Tar Heel ambush.
Less than five minutes later, Alex Dixon struck for the first time this year when he redirected a cross from Ababio past Luthy and into the back of the net for the equalizer.
The Tar Heels continued to fire off shots through the final 20 minutes nearly getting the game winner from Michael Farfan in the 88th minute but Luthy was equal to the task forcing the game into overtime.
Each team tallied a shot in the first 10 minutes of overtime with Alex Dixon's attempt getting blocked by the Eagle defense before Scott Goodwin came up with a big save in the 96th minute.
The Eagles controlled play in the beginning of the second overtime period as leading scorer Charlie Rugg sent a shot wide in the 104th minute and Amit Aburmad forced Goodiwn into another save in the 105th.
Farfan gave it one last late effort for the Tar Heels when he struck a ball with three seconds remaining but his shot sailed high giving the Tar Heels a hard-earned point on the road.
The Tar Heels are now 9-2-1 on the year and an unblemished 5-0-1 in conference play. Carolina's 16 points have them six points clear of Maryland with two games to play.
