CHAPEL HILL --- No. 18 North Carolina swept the doubles point and did not drop a set in singles in defeating visiting Winthrop, 7-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center in the dual match opener for both teams. The All-America tandem of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand set the tone for the Tar Heels, sweeping Siska Yasmine Alkema and Elizaveta Zaytseva at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. Junior Jelena Durisic did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 singles win over Sandra Herrera.
UNC (1-0) needed less than an hour to take the three doubles matches, led by Grabinski and Marand's shutout win at No. 1. No. 22 Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston clinched the point at No. 2 with an 8-4 win over Herrera and Giovanna Portioli, and No. 28 Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
Durisic quickly made it 2-0 with her flawless victory at No. 3, and the UNC second three sealed the victory shortly thereafter. Featherston and freshman Zoe De Bruycker finished almost simultaneously to give Carolina the necessary four points to take the match, with the underclassman duo posting matching 6-1, 6-0 wins at Nos. 6 and 4, respectively.
Grabinski made it 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 before Marand and Tsang rallied from second-set holes to complete the sweep. After winning the opening set 6-3, Marand fell behind 2-1 to Alkema before winning five of six games to complete the 6-3, 6-3 win. Tsang faced a 3-0 deficit in her match with Zaytseva at No. 1, but the Raleigh senior fought back for a match-ending 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The Tar Heels face a quick turnaround, as Carolina will travel to Minneapolis this weekend to face Kentucky and Minnesota in a pair of dual matches on Saturday and Sunday.
