CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After trailing 1-0 with less than 20 minutes remaining in Friday night's game against Old Dominion, the fifth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team scored three times in the final 15:21 to beat the visiting Lady Monarchs 3-1. UNC improved to 5-2 with the win, while ODU fell to 1-5.
Neither team scored in the first half, but Old Dominion got on the board in the 38th minute. After UNC goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell made a save on a penalty corner shot, ODU's Katie Ueberroth grabbed the rebound and sent it back into the right side of the goal to put her team up 1-0.
With the Tar Heels still trailing almost 17 minutes later, UNC coach Karen Shelton called a timeout and pulled O'Donnell in favor of an extra field player. Twenty-three seconds later, junior Danielle Forword send a hard shot from the middle of the circle past Lady Monarch keeper Kelly Driscoll to tie the game at 1-1. With O'Donnell back in the lineup, UNC was awarded a penalty stroke less than a minute later. Senior captain Britt van Beek shot the ball into the left side of the net to put the Tar Heels up for good, 2-1 at the 55:22 mark.
Old Dominion called a timeout with 10:32 remaining in the game and pulled Driscoll for the remainder of the action in an effort to pick up the tying goal, but it was UNC that managed one more score. On a penalty corner with 1:25 to play, junior Melanie Brill sent a direct shot into the goal, with assists by senior Kate Scholl on the pushout and sophomore Katelyn Falgowski on the stick stop. Carolina had 15 penalty corners in the game, but converted on just one.
The Tar Heels totaled 27 shots to ODU's six, five of which came in the second half. The Lady Monarchs had four corners. Driscoll finished with 12 saves and ODU had three defensive saves - two by Katelyn Smither and one by Hanna Warren. Jackie Kintzer started in goal for the Tar Heels and played the first half. O'Donnell played the second half, picking up two saves.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against Radford. The game will be broadcast live on the web as part of the ACC Select package. For more information, go to ACCSelect.com.
