
Marand Captures St. Mary's Classic Title

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- North Carolina sophomore Sanaz Marand defeated NC State's Daria Petrovic 6-2, 6-1 to win the flight one title at the St. Mary's Classic at the University of Tennessee Sunday. Marand, ranked No. 39 in the ITA preseason rankings, topped Yevgeniya Stupak of East Tennessee State in the quarterfinals and No. 91 Brooke Buck of Notre Dame in the semifinals.
No. 80 Austin Smith, Alexandra Jurewitz and Linzee Mabrey also advanced to flight championships. Smith fell to No. 110 Colleen Rielley of Notre Dame in the flight two final 6-1, 6-0, Jurewitz dropped the flight seven title match to Notre Dame's Kali Krisik 6-1, 6-2, while Mabrey lost to Tennessee's Samantha Orlin 6-0, 6-1 in the flight eight final.
In doubles action, Marand and Sophie Grabinski advanced to the flight one final where they lost to Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor, the nation's No. 10 tandem, 8-3. Meg Fanjoy and Jurewitz also reached a flight final, falling to Tennessee's Jennifer Meredith and Rosalie Alda 8-2 in the flight three championship.
Next up for the Tar Heels will be the Furman Fall Classic Sept. 28-30.
