No. 11 Carolina Advances To NCAA Second Round

CHAPEL HILL --- The No. 11 North Carolina women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a convincing 4-0 win over Marist Saturday morning at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC dropped just one game in doubles play before getting singles wins from Katrina Tsang, Sara Anundsen and Laura Reichert to clinch the victory.
The tandem of Austin Smith and Meg Fanjoy got things started for the Tar Heels (22-8) with an 8-1 win over Emily Zampello and Mirelva Colon at No. 3 doubes. Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long, the nation's No. 2 doubles team, then secured the doubles point with an 8-0 win over Christine Ong and Cassie Strange at No. 1.
Marist (12-2) got early leads in a pair of singles matches, but Carolina proved to be too much for the Red Foxes. Tsang set the tone quickly with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Strange at No. 2 singles. Anundsen followed shortly thereafter with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Megan Gureck at No. 4, and Reichert sealed the victory for the Tar Heels with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6.
Carolina took the first set in the other three matches, with Long, Caitlin Collins and Smith all closing in on victories when the match was suspended.
The win was UNC's seventh straight in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, a streak that dates back to 2000. Carolina's sweep also marked the sixth year in a row that saw the Tar Heels not drop a match in the first round.
UNC has now won five straight NCAA matches at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, including regional titles in 2005 and 2006.
Carolina will face the winner of Saturday afternoon's LSU-Duke match Sunday at 1 p.m.
