CHAPEL HILL --- No. 14 North Carolina swept the doubles point for the second straight match and won four of six singles matches to score a 5-2 upset victory over No. 9 Miami Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. Just one day after head coach Brian Kalbas earned his 300th career win, the Tar Heels notched their first victory over Miami during his tenure.
Just as it was in Friday's win over Florida State, the doubles point proved to be crucial. At the No. 1 position, No. 3 Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long got things started with an 8-5 win over No. 19 Audrey Banada and Romy Farah. UNC (18-7, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) then clinched the point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 by No. 28 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand over No. 31 Audra Cohen and Caren Seenauth. The loss was Cohen and Seenauth's first in dual match play this spring. Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Gina Sabatino and Laura Vallverdu.
The Tar Heels quickly moved ahead 2-0 as Anundsen registered her second straight easy victory, a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Sabatino. Miami (15-5, 6-2 ACC) cut the lead to 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 win by No. 14 Vallverdu at No. 3, but the Hurricanes would get no closer. No. 62 Tsang and No. 64 Marand finished off straight-set victories to clinch the win.
No. 90 Smith added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 to give Carolina a 5-1 advantage. In the day's most exciting match, No. 1 Cohen edged No. 6 Long 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 1 singles. Long trailed 5-0 in the first set before nearly rallying to tie it at 5 before losing 6-4. She carried the momentum of the comeback into a 6-3 second-set win, but fell 10-8 in the third-set tiebreak.
Carolina will have the rest of Easter weekend off before traveling to Raleigh to face NC State on Thursday, April 12.
