RALEIGH, N.C. --- For just the second time this season, the No. 11 North Carolina women's tennis team dropped the doubles point but rallied in singles for the victory, defeating No. 42 NC State 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. Carolina took five of six singles matches, all in straight sets, to earn the win.
NC State (12-9, 3-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) got off to a hot start, defeating both of UNC's nationally-ranked doubles tandems. Alejandra Guerra and Daria Petrovic topped No. 3 Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen 8-5 at No. 1, while Kate Green and Julia Roach bested No. 28 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand 8-4 at No. 2, giving the Wolfpack the early 1-0 lead.
Carolina (19-7, 7-3 ACC) would regain its form in singles play, however, as the Tar Heels won five of six matches in impressive fashion. No. 6 Long defeated No. 100 Petrovic 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1, while No. 62 Katrina Tsang topped Berkeley Brock, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
Anundsen continued her impressive play of late with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Green at No. 4. No. 90 Austin Smith dropped Julia Roach 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and No. 64 Marand defeated Kristen Bleakley 6-3, 6-0.
