WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- No. 4 North Carolina could not overcome losing the doubles point and the Tar Heels fell to No. 21 Wake Forest, 4-3, Thursday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. No. 79 Katrina Tsang, Caitlin Collins and Sara Anundsen scored singles victories, but it was not enough against the home-standing Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest (6-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened the day with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the early advantage. No. 9 Jenna Long and Anundsen were victorious at No. 1 for UNC (11-4, 1-1 ACC), but that win came after the point was already decided.
Carolina got three wins in the first five singles matches to tie the score at 3. Tsang scored a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 97 Ashlee Davis at No. 2 singles, while Anundsen also triumphed in straight sets, defeating Sierra Poske 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Collins added a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Ana Jerman at No. 5 to even the overall score.
The match would come down to No. 1 singles, where Alexandra Hirsch outlasted No. 4 Long, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
UNC will face a quick turnaround with Arizona State coming to Chapel Hill for an 11 a.m. match on Saturday.
