
No. 5 Carolina Cruises Past No. 68 Virginia Tech

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 5 North Carolina swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to open its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a 7-0 win over No. 68 Virginia Tech Wednesday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. UNC improved to 11-3, 1-0 in the ACC, while the Hokies fell to 7-2, 0-1 in league play.
Carolina opened the doubles point with a dominant 8-0 win at No. 1 by No. 17 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand. Jenna Long and Austin Smith then scored an 8-4 victory at No. 3 to clinch the point. No. 43 Sara Anundsen and Katrina Tsang won 8-3 at No. 2 to make Carolina 24-0 in home doubles matches this season.
No. 58 Marand got things started in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Jessica Brouwer. Collins then gave Carolina a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win over J.J. Larson at No. 5. No. 74 Tsang clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ashley James at No. 2.
After Anundsen knocked off Jessica Long at No. 4, the only remaining drama was at No. 1. Long, who ascended to No. 3 in the nation in the recent ITA rankings, held off Inga Beermann in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-0, 6-7 (5), (10-6).
Carolina is off until March 1 when the Tar Heels travel to Wake Forest for a 2 p.m. start.
