CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina got back-to-back pins from sophomore Dan Goetter at 197 pounds and junior Justin Dobies at heavyweight to rally for a 22-16 victory over Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Clash Saturday at Eddie Smith Field House. The Tar Heels (1-1) lost to Michigan State, 21-15, in their first dual.
In addition to Carolina's split, Virginia topped both the Boilermakers and Spartans to give each conference three dual wins on the day. NC State went 0-2 in the second annual event.
Dobies was one of four Tar Heels to post a pair of victories on the day, including his match-deciding pin versus Purdue. Redshirt freshmen Nick Stabile (141) and Thomas Scotton (157) and junior Keegan Mueller (165) were also unbeaten on the afternoon.
After falling behind over the first four bouts against Purdue, Carolina got back in the match with a major decision by Scotton over Nick Bertucci and an overtime victory by Mueller over Justin Fraga at 165 to tie the match at 10. Carolina then grabbed the lead after the Boilers were docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Purdue then regained a 16-10 advantage with wins at 174 and 184 before the Tar Heels staged their dramatic comeback. Goetter needed just 44 seconds to pin Logan Brown, and Dobies followed with a pin of Roger Vukobratovich in 1:45 to close the 22-16 victory.
Earlier in the day against Michigan State, Carolina won five bouts, including consecutive victories by Stabile, Vincent Ramirez, Scotton and Mueller, but fell 21-15. The Tar Heels held a 12-9 lead, but dropped three of the final four bouts.
With two wins on the day Stabile improved to 6-0 on the young season for the Tar Heels. Now 6-1 and 7-1, respectively, Scotton and Dobies are also off to fast starts for UNC.
The Tar Heels are back in action Nov. 30 at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.
