No. 8 Tar Heels Move To 4-0

CHAPEL HILL --- The eighth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team improved to 4-0 Monday with a pair of 6-1 wins over Winthrop and Charlotte at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels were a perfect 6-0 in doubles for the second time in three days and dropped just two sets in 12 singles matches.
No. 16-ranked Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen led the Carolina to a sweep of the doubles point in the opener against Winthrop (1-0). The All-America duo defeated Ana Paula Novaes and Antonija Bagaric 8-2. No. 24 Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand added an 8-5 win over Yelina Fadina and Patricia Coimbra, while Katrina Tsang and Laura Reichert dropped Paula Pereira and Alexandra Georgakopoulos 8-1.
Long, the No. 7 singles player in the country, defeated Coimbra 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, one of five wins for Carolina. Anundsen, No. 33 Austin Smith, No. 73 Marand and Meg Fanjoy all added straight-set victories. No. 19 Tsang fell 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8) to Novaes in her first career match at No. 1 singles.
Carolina shuffled its lineup against Charlotte (0-1), but the result was another 6-1 victory. The Tar Heels swept the doubles point behind wins from Smith/Fanjoy, Tsang/Reichert and Sophie Grabinski/Alexandra Jurewitz.
In singles, Marand and Fanjoy each picked up a second win on the day, at No. 3 and No. 5 respectively. Collins, Reichert and Jurewitz also got singles wins, while Smith fell to Ana Spivakovsky at No. 1 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5). Marand is now 4-0 on the season.
UNC is off until Jan. 24, when the Tar Heels welcome No. 31 Tennessee to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
